Description of the Characteristics of the FFU Filter Unit
2025.08.27
FFU (Fan Filter Unit) is a combination of a fan and a filter, and it can also be called "a filtering device with its own fan". The FFU is usually installed at the end of the air supply in the clean room, usually placed on the suspended "dry" gasket-sealed frame structure. The upper part of the FFU is the fan module, and the lower part is the filter. Depending on the cleanliness requirements, the filter can be a different level of high-efficiency (HEPA) or ultra-high-efficiency (ULPA) filter, providing clean air to the clean room. The fan module not only has to overcome the resistance of the efficient filter at the bottom of the FFU, but also has to overcome the resistance of all the components in the circulation air channels, then maintaining the set air velocity. The FFU system has the characteristics of simple construction planning, flexible air velocity adjustment, and ease of changing the clean area, and has thus become one of the popular system methods in industrial clean rooms.
This unit is designed to be highly flexible, facilitating cooperation with specialized ceiling frameworks and other suitable frameworks. When the filter adopts a knife-edge structure, this unit can also be used for liquid tank sealed ceiling frameworks. According to the design standards, it can easily cooperate with any ceiling framework to meet the cleanliness level requirements. The outer frame can be made of aluminum or stainless steel, each with its own characteristics. By using this unit, high-quality air can be transported to the clean room, and the air circulation is good. It is suitable for manufacturers of semiconductors, electronics, flat panel displays, and disk drives, as well as optical, biological industries and other places with strict control requirements for air pollution.
The five major characteristics of the FFU filter unit:
First: Flexibility.
Because the FFU is self-powered, it is not restricted by the area. In a large clean room, it can be controlled by zones as needed. Moreover, as the semiconductor production process changes, the factory planning must be adjusted accordingly. The flexibility of the FFU makes such adjustments easy and does not bring additional investment.
Second: Reusability.
Theoretically, if an FFU device is not needed for a while, it can be disassembled, sealed well, and properly stored, leaving it for future use.
Third: Negative pressure ventilation.
This is a unique feature of the FFU. Since it can provide static pressure, the supply air static pressure box is relatively negative with respect to the clean room. Thus, the particles in the static pressure box will not be affected by the pressure and leak into the clean area, making the sealing very simple and safe.
Fourth: Shortened construction period.
Using the FFU eliminates the production and installation of ducts, as ducts take up a large construction period in clean engineering. Any investor hopes that the investment can bring returns quickly, and using the FFU becomes a possibility.
Fifth: Reduced operating costs.
Although the initial investment when using the FFU is higher than using duct ventilation, it shows outstanding energy-saving and maintenance-free characteristics in the later operation.
