Misconception 1: The more expensive the air purifier, the better its performance (the more filter layers, the better the purification performance)
In principle, the core technology of air purifier products is filtration. Simply put, it is a combination of a fan and a filter. During operation, the micro electric fan in the machine stirs the indoor air, and under the effect of the fan, the particles in the air are adsorbed onto the filter, reducing the number of particles in the air and achieving the purpose of cleaning the indoor air. From this, it can be seen that the key to an air purifier lies in the installation of the filter. And most products, the difference in price is precisely determined by the number of filter layers and the quality of the material.
However, "the more filter layers, the better the purification performance" and "the higher the price, the better the purification performance" are both inaccurate. Firstly, although the number of filter layers determines the price and the performance, the material of the filter will directly affect the purification performance, especially the HEPA filter, which currently has prices ranging from several hundred to several thousand, and the filtering performance has significant differences. Secondly, in addition to the filter, some air purifiers also have additional functions such as LCD screens, humidifiers, etc. These are important factors determining the price of the product, and even there have been reports stating that a product priced at 7,000 yuan has a cost of only around 2,000 yuan, showing that blindly using the price as a benchmark is also inaccurate.
Misconception 2: Make sure to choose "a purification rate of 99.9%" when purchasing
The biggest misconception for consumers regarding air purifiers might be the one that all major manufacturers are promoting nowadays - "99.9%". If you see such promotion when purchasing an air purifier, there is no need to believe it too much. Firstly, due to the lack of industry standards, the so-called purification rate has no a complete and consistent algorithm. Secondly, the purification rate of the product will be affected by various factors such as air volume, working time, room area, etc., resulting in the same purification rate of 99.9% having different usage experiences.
Of course, it is not that purchasing an air purifier now is without any basis. There are many goals that determine the performance of an air purifier, such as CADR value, 1-hour purification rate, HEPA filter and other filter quality, the cost of replacing filters, noise, etc. Especially the CADR value (clean air output rate), it is the rate of clean air output by an air purifier as determined by the American Appliance Manufacturers Association (AHAM) according to certain testing standards, simply put, the higher the CADR value, the higher the purification rate of the air purifier, but some brands have not participated in the testing of AHAM.
Misconception 3: In addition to the performance goals, when purchasing an air purifier, one should also pay attention to "applicable area"
At present, many consumers' important goal when purchasing an air purifier is the "applicable area" of the product. Actually, the so-called applicable area is not reliable. If this is used to make a purchase decision, it is not reasonable. Because "applicable area" is not a value that can be determined through simple calculation, and it is not a stable value. It will change at any time due to changes in the application environment and conditions, "such as the air quality and climate conditions of the city where it is located, the floor height and decoration materials of the user's residence, etc." This is why in the already mature air conditioner product standards, there are clear rules for the definition and inspection methods of cooling capacity, but "applicable area" has never been included in the product standards.
The fierce competition in the market has left consumers at a loss when choosing air purifiers. They simply don't know what to base their purchase decisions on. Have you ever felt this way?
