Activated carbon filter net purifies fresh air - basic knowledge

2025.04.07
The pollutants in indoor air are diverse and have various forms. In response to this situation, most of the air purification products on the market have targeted purification technologies. For instance, air purifiers for removing formaldehyde have a filtering system with activated carbon filters being the most prominent.
Introduction to Activated Carbon Filter Screen
The filter is the core component of an air purifier and is also a key component for evaluating whether an air purification product has significant purification capabilities. The activated carbon filter uses a porous structure such as aluminum honeycomb, plastic honeycomb, or paper honeycomb as the carrier. The internal developed pore structure and abundant micropore organization of the activated carbon filter allow the powerful adsorption force field of the activated carbon micropores to adsorb the molecules of toxic and harmful substances into the micropores when the toxic and harmful gases in the air come into contact with the activated carbon.
Nowadays, most air purifiers for removing formaldehyde use activated carbon formaldehyde filters, with a lifespan of about one year. Usually, they are used alone. However, some air purifier manufacturers combine them with other types of filters, which can appropriately extend the service life and achieve a formaldehyde removal rate of up to 92%.
The method for selecting activated carbon filter screens
  1. It can be determined by the weight of the filter. The more pores there are on the activated carbon, the looser the overall structure will be. Thus, the overall adsorption performance of the activated carbon will be higher and its relative density will be lighter. Therefore, the quality of the activated carbon filter can be judged based on its weight. Under the same quality packaging conditions, the performance of a good activated carbon filter will be much larger in volume than the inferior product.
  2. Based on the bubbles. Due to the pore structure of activated carbon, air can be expelled through the pores in water to form bubbles. By observing the bubbles in the water, if the bubble lines are fine and last longer, it indicates that the adsorption performance of the activated carbon filter is better.
  3. Based on the de-colorization ability. Activated carbon is widely recognized as the "universal adsorbent" in the world, and thus it also has excellent de-colorization capability. You can put activated carbon into colored water and let it stand for 20 minutes. Then compare it with the colorless water sample. Under the same conditions, the stronger the de-colorization effect, the better the adsorption performance of the activated carbon.
The activated carbon filter screen is a consumable product that needs to be replaced after a certain usage period. It can be extended its service life through proper maintenance. For example, the surface dust can be removed using a vacuum cleaner, and it can be disassembled and exposed to sunlight regularly to keep it dry.

At present, although air purifiers for removing formaldehyde have gradually become popular in thousands of households, there are still consumers who have no understanding of air purification products. There are a wide variety of products on the market, with prices ranging from low to high. Before purchasing, it is advisable to familiarize oneself with knowledge related to activated carbon filters and other aspects, and avoid blindly following trends and making purchases.
