The significance and characteristics of laminar flow hoods in laboratory ventilation

2025.05.14
We all know that laminar flow hoods are often used in new laboratories and in the renovation and innovation of laboratory buildings. They can improve the cleanliness level, reduce noise and vibration, and also significantly lower the cost. The equipment is easy to maintain and is an ideal component for a clean environment.

Why are laminar flow hoods important ventilation equipment in laboratories?
First, we need to understand the following points:
When laboratory staff handle pathogenic microorganisms, test materials containing pathogenic microorganisms, or parasites, in order to ensure that the test objectives do not cause biological damage to humans and animals, and to prevent the surrounding environment from being contaminated by them, there are special requirements for the planning and construction of laboratories and animal testing rooms. According to the degree of damage to the test target, biosafety laboratories are usually classified into four levels, among which level one has the lowest need for biological safety barriers, and level four is the highest. The classification of biosafety laboratories is shown in Table 1. Among them, levels three and four belong to high-level biosafety laboratories, sometimes also called biosafety clean rooms, which are commonly referred to as P3 and P4 laboratories.
The surrounding environment is not contaminated by it, which has special requirements for the planning and construction of laboratories and animal testing facilities. According to the degree of damage caused by the experiment, biosafety laboratories are usually classified into four levels, with level one requiring the lowest level of biosafety containment and level four being the highest. The classification of biosafety laboratories is shown in Table 1. Levels three and four belong to high-level biosafety laboratories and are sometimes called biosafety clean rooms, which are commonly referred to as P3 and P4 laboratories.

The laminar flow hood has the following features in the ventilation and purification system of the laboratory:
  1. The laminar flow hood has low energy consumption and high static pressure, and can be adjusted in multiple stages or continuously. The operating cost is low.
  2. The laminar flow hood is designed with special flow channels and uniform flow systems, featuring low noise and uniform wind speed.
  3. The laminar flow hood is lightweight and is equipped with a hood-injection type equipment, making it easier to install, replace filters, and perform maintenance.
  4. The laminar flow hood uses a dedicated fan, has a long service life, and basically requires no maintenance. It can achieve computer group control and remote control functions.
  5. In new laboratories, laboratory buildings, or their renovations and innovations, the laminar flow hood can improve the cleanliness level, reduce noise and vibration, and also significantly reduce costs. It is an ideal equipment for clean rooms.
  6. The shell structure of the laminar flow hood can be made of stainless steel, aluminum plates, or cold-rolled steel plates with electrostatic spraying, featuring light weight, corrosion resistance, rust prevention, and good appearance.
  7. The laminar flow hood shortens the construction period of the workshop. The laminar flow system is energy-efficient, thereby addressing the shortcomings of large air conditioning rooms, high operating costs of air conditioning units, and centralized air supply.
  8. The independent structure feature of the laminar flow hood allows for easy adjustment, compensating for the lack of mobility of the clean room, and addressing the shortcomings of production technology that cannot be adjusted.
  9. The characteristic of the laminar flow hood in the workshop circulation system is that the entire clean room is composed of static pressure layer, technical layer, technical auxiliary layer, and return air channel. The FFU provides the power for the circulation air, mixing the fresh air and circulating air, and passing them through the ultra-high efficiency filter to the technical layer and technical auxiliary layer. The static pressure layer has a negative pressure relative to the technical layer.
  10. The use of the laminar flow hood circulation system in the clean room not only saves operating space, has high cleanliness safety, and low operating costs, but also has high operational flexibility. It can be upgraded and adjusted to the system at any time without affecting production. All of these can well meet the needs of the clean room. Therefore, understanding these points makes it easy to understand why the laminar flow hood is an important ventilation equipment for laboratories.
